"Its a dream" Scene study

This pivotal scene is where Chihiro makes the most character development. It starts with her finding the bridge outside the bath-house, as well as meeting Haku.
On the bridge, Chihiro finds herself being directed by Haku to leave ("You shouldn't be here. Get out of here now!"). Chihiro runs back to where her parents were to be greeted by these two gigantic pigs scoffing their faces with food. Chihiro is shocked and scared and runs back to the street, where the spirits are roaming.

She then runs back the way she came, finding a huge river with a vibrant town on the other size ("Water? What? I'm dreaming! I'm dreaming! Come on. Wake up! Wake up!"). She starts to panic, rocking back and forth on the steps, slowly turning transparent ("Wake up it's just a dream. It's just a dream. Go away. Away... Disappear. I'm see-through! It's just a bad dream.").

By now it is already nightfall, and a boat full of spirits is crossing the river. The boat unloads, and Chihiro runs and hides nearby as the spirits get off the boat. The spirits float out of the rooms as paper masks, slowly turning into the full spirit as the leave the boat. As Chihiro is hiding, Haku finds her and feeds her some food. ("Don't worry; I'm not going to turn you into a pig") Yu-bird flies above, searching for Chihiro. Haku hides her, covering her with his body ("don’t move."). As yu-bird flies past, Chihiro is 'binded' to the ground. Haku 'un-binds' her with his magic ("In the name of the wind and water within the, unbind her."), then they run through the streets as fast as the wind.

Haku and Chihiro reach the bathhouse's bridge. Using magic, Haku puts a spell on Chihiro to disguise her as she crosses the bridge ("You have to hold your breath while we cross the bridge. Even the tiniest breath will break the spell, and then everyone will see you."), but things don’t go to plan. Just before they get to the other side of the bridge, a small frog known as ' Aogaeru' stops Haku. Chihiro takes a breath ("Master Haku! Where have you been? Wha... A human?").

Haku explains what Chihiro must do to save her parents (HAKU: Listen carefully to what I tell you to do. You can't stay here. They'll find you and you'll never get to rescue your parents. I'll create a diversion while you escape. CHIHIRO: No! Don't leave me. I don't wanna be alone. HAKU: You don't have any choice if you want to help your parents.   This is what you have to do. This is what you have to do. CHIHIRO: They did turn into pigs. I wasn't dreaming. HAKU: Don't worry. Now, when things quiet down, go out through the back gate. Go all the way down the stairs until you reach the boiler room where they stoke the fires. There you'll find Kamajii, the boiler man. CHIHIRO: Kamajii? HAKU: Tell him you want to work here. Even if he refuses, you must insist. If you don't get a job, Yubaba will turn you into an animal. CHIHIRO: Yubaba. Huh? HAKU: You'll see. She's the witch who rules the bathhouse. Kamajii will try to turn you away or trick you into leaving but just keep asking for work. It'll be hard work, but you'll be able to stay here. Then, even Yubaba can't harm you. CHIHIRO: Mm-hmm. I have to go. Don't forget, Chihiro, I'm your friend. CHIHIRO: How did you know my name's Chihiro? HAKU: I've known you since you were very small. Good luck, and whatever you do, don't make a sound.")

In conclusion, this is one of the most important scenes. Chihiro changes the most and goes through the most character development. We met another one of the main characters (Haku). Chihiro finds the bath-house and learns about Yubaba, Kamajii, No-Face and the spirit world.
